Syllabus 9702Cambridge International
Cambridge A Level Physics (9702) covers classical mechanics, thermal physics, waves, electricity, electromagnetism, quantum physics, nuclear physics and medical physics. Five papers including Paper 3 (advanced practical) and Paper 5 (planning, analysis & evaluation). The most demanding science subject — and a direct ticket to Engineering, Physics and Medicine programmes.
Key topics
- Mechanics — kinematics, dynamics, work-energy-power
- Waves & oscillations — SHM, sound, light, polarisation
- Electricity — Kirchhoff's laws, capacitors, electromagnetic induction
- Thermal physics — first law, kinetic theory, internal energy
- Quantum physics — photoelectric effect, wave-particle duality
- Nuclear & medical physics — radioactivity, X-rays, MRI, ultrasound
Exam tips
- 01Paper 5 (planning & analysis) is the hardest — practice it from October to May.
- 02Always quote significant figures correctly — examiners are strict.
- 03Memorise the data booklet — knowing where to look saves 5+ minutes per paper.
- 04For derivations, write what you assume — examiners reward clarity.
- 05Practice past papers from at least the last 5 sessions — pattern recognition is half the battle.
